On May 19, 2026, Google revealed the most significant changes to its Search product in years during the I/O keynote in Mountain View. Elizabeth Reid, VP of Search, clearly stated the transformation: "We are entering the next chapter of Google Search where incredible AI features aren't just in search — Google Search is AI Search through and through."


Gemini 3.5 Flash Is Now the Brain of AI Mode — Globally

Search Agents Now Run 24/7 — Without You Asking

This is the most architecturally novel announcement from I/O 2026. Google introduced persistent background search agents: autonomous agents that operate continuously within Search, monitoring the web for changes relevant to a question a user has previously specified — without requiring a new query.


Liz Reed described them as "operating in the background 24/7," intelligently reasoning across blogs, news sites, social posts, real-time finance, shopping, and sports data to find exactly what a user needs "at exactly the right moment" — then pushing a synthesized update with actionable steps. A user looking for a specific apartment? The agent scans listings continuously and notifies when conditions match. A product launch? The agent monitors and alerts when confirmed.


Personal Intelligence Reaches 200 Countries — Free

Google announced a major expansion of its Personal Intelligence feature to nearly 200 countries, and — critically — most features require no subscription. Personal Intelligence allows Search to synthesize answers using a user's own data: Gmail, Calendar, Docs, and other Workspace signals. A search for "what did my doctor say about my medication" now potentially draws on your actual email threads.



Universal Cart: AI-Powered Shopping Across the Web

Google's Universal Cart is a new intelligent shopping hub embedded in Search. Once a user adds products from multiple retailers, the cart automatically surfaces deals, price drops, price history, stock alerts, and compatibility warnings. Integrated with Google Wallet, it factors in payment perks, loyalty programs, and merchant offers to guide purchase decisions — all without leaving Google.

"Say you're building your first custom PC and add a few parts from several retailers. Your cart will proactively flag any product incompatibilities and suggest alternatives." The cart already knows your payment method perks and loyalty data.

Universal Cart is coming to Search and the Gemini app in the US this summer, with YouTube and Gmail to follow — creating a closed commerce loop across Google's entire product surface.


Lighthouse Now Checks for Agent Readiness — Including LLMs.txt

In a move that flew under the radar during the keynote, Google announced that Lighthouse — the web performance and auditing tool used by developers and SEOs — now includes agent monitoring capabilities. One of the signals it now checks for is the presence of an LLMs.txt file.

SEO consultant Marie Haynes noted the nuance from Google's own framing: "LLMs.txt helps agents understand how to use your website, which eventually will be search, but at this point, it's not something you need unless you specifically have agents using your website." This is an important caveat — it's not yet a ranking signal, but it's a leading indicator of where agent-based search is heading.

An emerging convention (similar to robots.txt) that tells AI agents and LLMs how to interpret and interact with your website — what content is available, how it's structured, and what actions are permissible.

Google confirmed at I/O that AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users. Queries in AI Mode average three times longer than conventional searches, and total volume has more than doubled every quarter since launch. SEO consultant Marie Haynes captured the sentiment many in the industry share: "A lot of SEOs were concerned that Google might announce that AI Mode is becoming the default — and this is not the case — but boy are we getting close to that."
